Ngāti Wehi Wehi are an iwi with whakapapa ties to the Tainui waka. Our ancestral whenua lies in Manakau, within the southern Horowhenua District, extending across the Kāpiti Coast and parts of the wider Wellington region.

As an iwi, Ngati Wehi Wehi continue to uphold our tikanga and kaitiakitanga, maintaining mana whenua, mana moana, and mana tangata, affirming our enduring authority and connection to our rohe.

Historical Roots & Rohe

  • Migration & Settlement

In the 1820s, ancestors of Ngāti Wehi Wehi migrated south alongside Ngāti Toa Rangatira, settling in the Manawatū–Horowhenua region. They established themselves in the Huritini, Waikawa, and Manakau areas, where their descendants continue to live today.

  • Marae Connection

The heart of the iwi  is Wehi Wehi Marae, located near Manakau, south of Levin. The marae stands with its whare tūpuna, Wehi Wehi, and its wharekai, Patiharuru, both named after revered ancestors. The marae remains a centre of cultural, spiritual, and communal life.

  • Partnership & Governance

Ngāti Wehi Wehi plays a significant role in local governance and community affairs. We reinforce our whakapapa links to neighbouring hapu and iwi via our membership  of both Te Runanga o Raukawa and Te Tumatakahuki ensuring the voice and rangatiratanga of Ngati Wehi Wehi is upheld in decisions affecting our whenua and awa.
