Claim Application
We can confirm that the Wehi Wehi claim was filed on 4 June 2008. No written notice of receipt, or notification of registration and accompanying Wai number have been received to date. We have contacted the Tribunal registration staff by writing on 17 June 2008 and by telephone today in respect of this matter. The Acting Registrar advise us that the application is in a huge backlog – probably due to the rush to file claims before the 1 September deadline – and that the Tribunal has therefore had to increase its usual timeframe for registration from 30 working days to 40. We also understand that the Tribunal is somewhat shorthanded at the moment.
This means that, since applications are dealt with in order of receipt, the Wehi Wehi claim may well not be registered until the end of July, but the Registrar assured me that since it appears to be a well-prepared and straightforward application it should be quick to process when they do turn their attention to it.
Legal Aid Application
We also confirm that an application for legal aid funding has been made to and received by the Legal Services Agency. A hard copy of this application was also forwarded to us on 18 June 2008. The Agency’s acceptance of the application will be deferred until the Tribunal reports to it on the claim’s status. That report will not occur until after the claim has been allocated a Wai number, so that process too is held up by the Tribunal’s ability to process new claims.
Research Hui
They also advise that the writer will be out of the office for the week 23-27 June 2008, and on leave from 11 July to 28 July 2008. They suggested it would be good therefore to meet during the first two weeks of July. Alternatively, they said they could send someone else to meet with us, or the meeting could be postponed until after 28 July…..will keep you posted on this.

Te Kotahitanga o Te Iwi o Ngāti Wehi Wehi and Marae Trustees Management Committee
Notice is given that the Marae Trustees and Management Committee will hold a WAI 1482 Treaty of Waitangi Claimant hui in the Poririua ki Manawatu District Inquiry (Wai 2200) on Saturday 21st June commencing at 10am.
Venue: Ngati Wehi Wehi Marae, 940 State Highway One, Manakau.
The hearing is open to all descendants of Wehi Wehi and will be an opportunity to discuss the Te Kotahitanga o Te Iwi o Ngati Wehi Wehi treaty claims and journey to date.

Wai 1482 Claimant Meeting

Wai1482 Claimants on behalf of themselves, and of Te Kotahitanga o te Iwi o Ngati Wehi Wehi include Ropata (Bob)William Miratana and Patricia (Paddy) Ngatakutai Jacobs, Richard (Rihari) Edward Orzecki met today at Ngati Wehi Wehi marae to discuss a number of important issues to do with our claims both in the Wai2200 Taihape ki Kapiti inquiry area and in the Wai898 Te Rohe Potae Inquiry District.

The meeting was fruitful and a number of matters were confirmed by email to moved our claims forward. The claims process started in April 2008 so we are four years into this process.We are asking all of our whanau who have an interest in participating in the process or providing some help to make contact with our claimant members.

Te Kotahitanga o te Iwi o Ngati Wehi Wehi had sent its claim to legal advisors Rainey Collins on Wednesday June 4th, 2008. The Statement of Claim had taken over six months to complete. The marae committee unanimously endorsed the claim be lodged as soon as possible at its meeting on Tuesday June 2nd.
Richard Orzecki Chairman of Ngati Wehi Wehi and Ropata (Bobbie) Miratana had lodged the claim on behalf of themselves and Te Kotahitanga o te Iwi o Ngati Wehi Wehi.

Rainey Collins then lodge the Statement of Claim with the Waitangi Tribunal with no timeframe on when it might be registered except to say that all claims had to be lodged by Septmber 30th, 2008 hence unprecedented activity was happening.
On July 15th 2008 we received a letter from the Waitangi Tribunal to confirm that Statement of Claim filed in 4 June 2008 was allocated a WAI number 1482 and is titled ‘Te Kotahitanga o te Iwi o Ngati Wehi Wehi Claim’ and was registered on 7 July 2008. So this important milestone tool just over a month to complete.

Historic Signing of Memorandom of Understanding 2009

Please find below a copy of the speech given at the signing of our Memorandum of Understanding with the Raukawa Trust Board on Tuesday 22nd September. Five vehicles of Wehi Wehi whanau travelled from Manakau be in attendance, Other whanau also arrived in Tokoroa to be part of this special day.

It was is with great honour that Ngati Wehi Wehi sit with our whanau/hapu/iwi from nga uri o Raukawa here in Tokoroa today.
To our ancestor Tawhao and our tupuna Turongo and Whatihua that link us together. Descendants from Wahtihua come today from the south with members of Ngati Hikitanga to witness this day
We acknowledge the leadership shown by the rangatira of Raukawa to allow us to be part of this process. We are hopeful that our whakapapa will bear real fruit and make our ties even stronger.
To the hemana of the Raukawa Trust Board George Rangitutia and fellow trustees tena koe.
My tupuna George Pupuha Taha was a marae trustee of Ngati Wehi Wehi in 1916. He married my great grand mother Mako Hona and had four children. My great grand mother died during the Spanish flu epidemic and George moved back to the Waikato to marry another beautiful maiden Noenoe Te Kooro.
Koro George had a much larger whanau in the Waikato and some of the descendants are here today at this hui. I have a photo that showed four of his daughters Whaea Rangi, Whaea Agnes, Whaea Doreen and Whaea Kura. This is the whakapapa that links Raukawa together.
Lastly we acknowledge the whanau/hapu/iwi members of Ukaipo. On that marae stands a whare named Wehi Wehi who grew up in this area of Kaokaoroa o Patetere. Our Koro Jim Claire and kaumatua Ray George we acknowledge our history with our Tupuna Wehi Wehi and whanau ties.
We would like to reiterate to whanau here today, that we have come to share with you our whakapapa, resources, and interests. We hope that is reciprocated and that from this process we build a strong foundation moving forward.\

Memorandom of Understanding Te Kotahitanga 2010

Please find below the link to access the a Memorandum of Understanding with the foundation members of Te Kotahitanga. The M.o.U. was signed on 24th June at Te Ara Kura in Feilding. The signing parties included;
Ngati Kauwhata means those of Te Marae Komiti O Kauwhata Trust represented by the Wai 784 and Wai 972 claimants.
Ngati Wehi Wehi means those of Te Kotahitanga o Te Iwi o Ngati Wehi Wehi represented by the Wai 1482 claimants.
Ngati Hikitanga Te Paea means those of Ngati Hikitanga O Te Paea descendants represented by the Wai 977 claim.
